Junior livestock show has record entries
The 2025 Wood County Junior Livestock Show (WCJLS) is set to take place from March 31 to April 4 at the Quitman ISD Agricultural Pavilion.
The event has seen a remarkable increase in entries across all categories, with participation in competitive events nearly doubling compared to previous years – totaling 964 across all shows and competitive events.
The show highlights the incredible efforts of Wood County’s 4-H and FFA programs, which have come together to inspire and guide the next generation of agricultural leaders. Their collaboration has been instrumental in promoting community involvement and providing youth with opportunities to develop lifelong skills in agriculture, leadership and teamwork.
From livestock and floral contests to baked goods and photography submissions, the growth in participation reflects the thriving enthusiasm of Wood County’s youth in showcasing their talents and dedication to agriculture. The show continues to be a cornerstone event for the community, fostering growth and learning for participants while celebrating the agricultural traditions of the region.
Schedule Highlights:
Monday, March 31: Breeding show begins at 8 a.m. Market animals move in following the Breeding Show.
Tuesday, April 1: Livestock check-ins and the ag mechanics and rabbit shows kick off.
Wednesday, April 2: Broiler, dairy heifer and hog shows take center stage.
Thursday, April 3: Market lamb and goat shows begin in the morning, followed by the commercial heifer and steer shows in the evening.
Friday, April 4: Floral and baked goods contests, the livestock judging contest, public speaking, photography and the sale of champions conclude the event.
“The growth in entries this year is a testament to the dedication of our youth and the support from our community,” said Lindsey Yeager, county extension agent. “The teamwork between 4-H and FFA has been a key driver of this success, and we are thrilled to see the combined efforts making such an impact.”
Community members are encouraged to attend and support the participants. Whether a seasoned livestock enthusiast or new to the show, the WCJLS offers an exciting opportunity to witness the hard work and skill of local youth.
