Lady Bulldog defense puts the clamps on Winona

Posted

The Quitman Lady Bulldogs traveled to Winona last Tuesday evening and came home with a 56-22 District 13-3A win.

After taking control of the contest early, Quitman established a defensive presence making it difficult for Winona to score. After one quarter, Quitman led 15-8 and stretched that lead to 29-13 at the half.

The second half belonged to the Lady Bulldog defense as they held Winona to just nine points in the half, including two points in the fourth quarter. In the second half Quitman outscored Winona 27-9

Kaysi Parker led the team in scoring with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Maddy Pence added 11 points, five rebounds and seven steals while freshman Allie Berry scored eight points and led the team in rebounding with 12. Berry’s freshman teammate Sadie Vander Schaaf added seven points. Sophomore Ashley Davis was solid on both ends of the court scoring five points and adding seven rebounds along with five assists.

Quitman Coach Blake Hamrick said his team is still learning.

“I thought we played flat. I was a little disappointed with how we came out and started the game. We played a better second half, made some shots, and forced some turnovers,” Hamrick said. “We just have to make sure we bring the same energy every quarter of every game. We still have a lot of learning and growing to do before we are where we need to be mentally.”

Quitman closed the season against Winnsboro at home Tuesday night. Winnsboro has clinched the district title and is undefeated at 11-0 with only Quitman left on the district slate. Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill is in second place with Mt. Vernon in third and Mineola in fourth for the final playoff spot.

Tuesday’s final game at home for the Lady Bulldogs will find them honoring their two seniors Reiny Luman and Carley Spears on “Senior Night.”

The Lady Bulldogs are already looking forward to next year when they will have a seasoned crew to battle against state elite teams like Winnsboro and Chapel Hill in district action.

Returning with varsity experience will be Pence and Parker, who will be seniors, while next year’s junior class includes Addie Marcee and Ashley Davis. Berry and Vander Schaaf got in valuable playing time as freshmen and both have shown they will contributed to varsity in their sophomore seasons.
