The Quitman Lady Bulldogs hung on to their playoff hopes defeating Harmony 42-34 in a hard fought battle on the road Friday.

Addie Marcee got the scoring started with a triple at the 6:30 mark. Sadie Vander Schaaf and Allie Berry got first stanza scores, but the Lady Eagles stormed back to take an 11-7 lead after one quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs used a strong defense to make a big run in the second quarter while holding the Lady Eagles to three points. Quitman got scoring and key rebounds from freshman Annabelle Popek, Parker, Berry and Kaylee Wood, leading the Lady Bulldogs to a 19-14 first half lead.

Popek continues to get stronger with each game. She hit for six points in the third quarter. Parker and Vander Schaaf also scored in the quarter giving Quitman a 29-23 advantage going into the final quarter.

Vander Schaaf got the Lady ‘Dogs going in the final quarter with a bucket to give Quitman a 32-23 lead. A scrappy Harmony team fought back to cut the score to 32-29, but Popek, Vander Schaaf and Berry led a Quitman surge in scoring giving the Lady Bulldogs a 39-29 lead with 1:30 to go. An Ashley Davis free throw with nine seconds left made it a final score of 42-34.

Popek led the scoring charge for Quitman with 13 points, followed by sophomore Vander Schaaf’s 11 points. Popek also had 12 rebounds. Sophomore Berry and senior Parker each added seven points while Berry secured seven rebounds and Parker eight.

On Tuesday of last week, the Lady Bulldogs played a non-district contest against Tyler Heat, a home school program. Quitman won that game 33-31 led by Parker with 11 along with Davis and Popek scoring eight each.

Quitman is still in the hunt for the state playoffs, chasing fourth place Mineola. The Lady Bulldogs are 16-14 on the season and 4-5 in district action. Mineola is 15-14 on the year and 5-5 in district play. The teams split their district competition with both teams winning games on the home floors.
