Lady Bulldogs win a nail-biter vs. Mineola
In a clash between top district basketball teams last Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Quitman Lady Bulldogs edged the Mineola Lady Jackets 46-45 at Ballard Gym.
With wins Friday to conclude the first half of district play, Quitman stands in second place with a 5-1 record while Mineola is third at 4-2. Both trail unbeaten Malakoff.
Mineola put up 11 points in the first quarter to lead Quitman 11-10 and managed to hold a 26-23 halftime lead.
The third quarter proved pivotal as the Lady Bulldogs put up 14 points while limiting the Lady Jackets to four and pulled ahead 37-30.
Mineola rallied and tied things at 44-44 late in the contest.
Quitman scored to lead 46-44, and Mineola’s chance to tie the game fell short, making one of two free throws.
Kaylin Sapp led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points on 5-7 from three-point range.
Annabelle Popek added 9 points, Autumn Cason 7 and Allie Berry 6.
Quitman defeated Grand Saline in a weather-delayed game on Saturday, 54-21, to finish the first half of district play.
Quitman jumped to a 13-3 lead in the first quarter and then put the game away with a 23-4 fourth period.
Cason scored 12 points, Sadie Vander Schaaf eight, Popek seven and Alexis Frazier and Addison Sapp six each.
Mineola girls defeated Edgewood 33-26 to hold onto third place.
After falling behind 18-14 at halftime, Mineola pulled ahead with a 13-3 third quarter.
Quitman was idle this Tuesday while Mineola was at Malakoff.
Quitman teams are at Edgewood Friday and host Malakoff next Tuesday.
The Yellowjackets are at Winona Friday and host Eustace next Tuesday.
Mineola boys had little trouble with Quitman for a 69-35 win last Tuesday but lost to Edgewood 62-42 on Friday for a 2-2 district record.
The Bulldogs fell to Grand Saline 72-33 and are 0-4 in district play.
Mineola jumped ahead of Quitman 22-9 in the first quarter and expanded that lead to 39-14 at halftime.
