So much for a home court advantage.

Earlier in district play, the Mineola Lady Jackets scored a 30-20 win at Quitman. Last Tuesday in Mineola, the Lady Bulldogs got a measure of revenge with a 45-34 win in a rough and tumble game dominated by the constant officials’ whistles of fouls and jump balls. It was if a hockey game broke out in the middle of a basketball contest.

There were six technical fouls called, five on Mineola and one on Quitman. Mineola coach Alan Wilson got a warning early in the game. He ended up getting two technical fouls and was ejected from the game with just less than five minutes to play. A Mineola assistant coach was issued a foul and two Lady Jacket players were also called for technical fouls. One Quitman player received a technical.

Quitman made 18-39 free throws while Mineola hit on 6-12. The Lady Jackets played the final minutes with just five available players.

Both teams played tough on defense. Quitman got off to a quick first quarter start taking a 12-3 advantage, holding Mineola to just three free throws by Mylee Fisher the entire quarter. With Quitman up 9-3 Lady Bulldog Kynlee Love hit a triple with 30 seconds left in the opening stanza.

Mineola got a three-point shot from Jayden Gardner to start the second quarter, cutting the Quitman lead to 12-6. Quitman countered with a basket by Reiny Luman on a great pass from Kaysi Parker. Carley Spears hit a pair of free throws at the 3:40 mark, and a Parker free throw gave Quitman a 17-6 lead.

The Lady Jackets stormed back to cut the lead making it 17-11 on back to back buckets by Jocelyn Whitehead. Mineola’s Kapri Riley hit a triple making it 20-14 until Quitman’s Ava Burroughs made a put back shot to leave the score 22-14 at intermission with the Lady Bulldogs leading.

Both teams came out playing conservative offensively but both fighting hard on defense. Early in the third quarter, Quitman increased the lead to 29-19 on 5-6 free throws by Maddy Pence and a basket by Parker on a great assist from Reiny Luman.

The Lady Jackets stormed back behind the strong play of their defense and scored seven points in the final 1:50 of the quarter. They were led by Riley’s nine points which included a pair of triples in the final minute, closing the Quitman lead to 29-26 going into the final quarter.

Quitman went on a 9-0 run to start the final period as the officials’ whistles dominated the final quarter. The Lady Bulldogs shot 16 charity tosses in the quarter, making five and keeping just ahead of the Lady Jackets. Mineola got tough hustle play from Mylee Fisher the entire game.

The Lady Jackets were hurt when they lost Gardner and Tahjae Black to foul trouble. Both teams fought to the final whistle in the emotional contest.

Quitman’s Parker played an outstanding game coming off the bench to score 11 points and coming down with seven timely rebounds. Ava Burroughs scored 11 points and was a constant threat defending in the lane. Kynlee Love added seven points, with Pence and Lindsey Hornaday five each.

For the Lady Jackets, Riley had 14 points hitting four three-point shots to lead Mineola. Gardner added six, Whitehead six, Mylee Fischer five and Macy Fischer three.
