Lady Jacket golfers returning to state
The Mineola High School girls golf team earned a repeat trip to the state tournament last week with its second-place finish at the regional tournament played at Oakhurst in Bullard.
The Lady Jackets turned in one of only two scores below 800 for the two-day event to qualify for state.
The state meet will be held May 16-17 in Austin.
Gunter captured the tournament with a two-day total of 356-346=702.
Mineola combined scores were 419-379=798, some 41 shots ahead of third place Maypearl.
Katie Hart of Chapel Hill was low individual medallist at 77-78=155. Alli Reil, competing for the Pottsboro team, shot 76-73=149.
The Lady Jackets were led by medalists Ava Johnson, Savannah Lopez and Sunni Ruffin, who also helped pace last year’s squad to an 8th-place finish at state.
Johnson shot a 99-88=187. Lopez shot 96-92=188 while Ruffin fired 101-89=190.
Bransyn Anderson, a newcomer to the team, shot 123-110=233.
Valerie Moreland, also a member of the ’21 squad, also competed.
The ladies will see a different venue this year, with the state tournament moved to the Jimmy Clay golf course, an Austin municipal course that has previously hosted state tournaments.
