Lady Jackets can’t turn first-set win into district-leading victory
An offensive explosion which fueled the Mineola Lady Jackets opening set against Eustace could not be sustained as Mineola fell to the Lady Bulldogs (25-12, 17-25, 14-25, 23-25) last Tuesday.
It left the two teams tied atop the district with a single loss.
The Lady Jackets sent booming shots across the net in the first set. The initial point summarized the set: Jaycee Maag dug the Eustace serve, Trinadee Jackson set a perfect ball for Mahayla McMahon, who drilled the ball into the Lady Bulldogs’ side from the left wing.
Mineola scored 14 offensive points in the first set. McMahon was on fire – scoring six kills and an ace. She was joined in the scoring ledger by Jayla Jackson, Jadelyn Marshall, Olivia Hughes and Kaitlyn McMahon (two aces).
The Lady Jackets were in the groove and cruised to a 13-point win in the first set.
Mineola’s offensive production just dried-up in the second and third sets. They generated only seven and five attacking points in the sets, respectively.
Predictably, when one side cools off the other side heats up. Eustace found their pace and began pounding the middle of the backcourt from each wing.
There were moments when a well-timed block by Marshall may have signaled a Mineola rally, but there was no traction.
The visitors took a 2-1 set lead.
The fourth set was an even affair. Each side generated 12 offensive points.
The score was knotted late. Eustace went up 23-20 after a series of Mineola mis-hits. Late-game scores by Hughes and Milo Reed gave the Lady Jackets hope, but two Lady Bulldog kills sealed the match.
The Lady Jackets followed with a four-set loss to Grand Saline on Friday, winning the second set 25-23 after falling in the first 29-27.
Grand Saline won the third set 25-23 and closed out the match with a 25-15 win.
Mineola wrapped up their district play with a win against Malakoff Tuesday, with playoffs forthcoming.
Bidistrict will be played Monday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Spring Hill against Tatum.
