The Mineola Lady Jackets used their productive defensive press to force 10 first-half turnovers, as Mineola cruised to a 61-25 win at Eustace Dec. 20. The win gave the Lady Jackets a 2-1 district record going into the holiday break.

Each Lady Jacket on the roster tallied points in the scorebook against an overmatched Eustace squad. Jayla Jackson led all Mineola scorers with 15 points. Her jump shot was fluid and on target, and her teammates looked to feed her the ball on the perimeter.

The Mineola press provided plenty of scoring opportunities in the opening quarter, and the Lady Jackets cashed in on most of those chances. At the break Mineola led 16-4.

In the second quarter, Eustace moved out of its 1-3-1 zone to a man-to-man defense, but the change did little to slow the Lady Jackets. Mineola led 28-9 at the half.

The second half was more of the same as Mineola outscored the hosts by 9 points in the third and by 8 points in the fourth.

Two features of the Mineola attack were very timely. First, the Lady Jackets aggressively attacked the basket, often getting hammered by the defense on the way in.

Secondly, the squad is beginning to communicate much better in the offensive zone. Several plays were converted to points immediately after two Lady Jackets exchanged eye contact.

These two developments, if they continue in the face of more-talented opposition, may unlock the district season for the team.

The next opportunity to watch the Lady Jackets in action is Friday Jan. 3, as they host Grand Saline.
