Lady Jackets dominate Grand Saline
The Mineola Lady Jackets used quick feet and solid decision-making in securing a 51-18 win over the visiting Grand Saline Lady Indians last Friday.
The tone of the game was set by the high level of activity practiced by the Lady Jackets from the opening tip. That activity was more than just quick feet. It also leveraged anticipation, communications, discipline and good headwork.
In the offensive zone, the Lady Jackets exercised sound decision-making in their shot selection. They also seemed to have developed a good sense of when to push the ball and when to run an offensive set.
All this combined for a wide margin in the final score.
Mahayla McMahon provided the initial jolt of energy for the Lady Jackets. She opened the game with a remarkable run at both ends of the floor.
In another bellwether signal for Mineola, Jayla Jackson hit her initial shot, and Mineola was off to a good start. They led 10-2 after one quarter.
Mineola spread the floor to start the second quarter, and the widened offensive set paid immediate dividends.
Jackson hit two 3-pointers, McMahon scored with a steal, Sophie Hogue issued a nice assist to Kali Chrietzberg and scored on a drive in the next trip down the floor.
At the half the score stood 22-8, Mineola.
The Lady Jackets blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Indians by 19 points. The conditioning of the Mineola side created a cascade of turnovers and fast break opportunities. In the quarter, Kyra Jackson contributed 15 points and Jaeyla Dennis 7.
The pace settled just a bit in the final stanza as Mineola cruised to their third win in district play.
After traveling to Quitman Jan. 7, the Lady Jackets host Edgewood on Friday, Jan. 10.
