Lady Jackets run district record to 8-0
“We have to own the court,” stated Mineola head volleyball coach TaShara Stephens. “When we own the court, we are a pretty good team,” she added.
That was just a bit of an understatement. The Lady Jackets are 22-10 this season and, after taking care of Edgewood Friday (25-15, 26-24, 27-29, 25-10), they are 8-0 in district play.
Stephens was speaking just before the Lady Jackets took the court in Edgewood to face a competent Lady Bulldogs squad.
It is hard to define ‘owning the court’ but, as if on cue, the Lady Jackets demonstrated it in the first set. Their play was characterized by aggression, pace and control.
Their movement certainly made it appear that they had an extra set of hands on the floor. They scored in a variety of methods. Just when it may have appeared to Edgewood that they had effectively countered the Lady Jackets, Mineola would attack with a different type of shot.
Edgewood adjusted well in the second set. The Lady Bulldogs used a 7-point surge late in the set to tie the score at 20. The advantage went back and forth at the end with Mahayla McMahon ending the set with an ace.
McMahon was on fire for most of the match. She finished with 14 emphatic kills. Also of note were the 19 assists offered up by Olivia Hughes and the 4 blocks of Jadelyn Marshall.
The competitive high point of the match was the third set. Tied 12 times, the set was a thriller. The home side took the third set after fending off a Mineola match point.
The Lady Jackets started the fourth set on quite a roll and never let up. A great set by Trinadee Jackson fed Marshall for a score. Kyra Jackson and Kali Chrietzberg registered kills, and Jaycee Maag continued her stellar defensive work.
The match wrapped-up in quick order.
The next chance to catch the Lady Jackets at home will be Tuesday, Oct. 22 as they host Eustace.
