Lady Panthers' relay sweep sparks 2nd place

Posted

The Alba-Golden girls track and field team started slow in Hawkins last Thursday, with only Kalli Wright earning the Lady Panthers points in field events with a 3rd place throw of 80'5" in discus and a 2nd place in shot put of 32'2.5" before racing back into contention by sweeping the relay races, running their way into a second place finish behind Hawkins and just ahead of Quitman.

The Lady Bulldogs saw a strong start by Brooklyn Marcee, who won with her long jump leap of 16'9.5" and her pole vault of 11'9" high, netting 20 early points for Quitman. Bonnie Vander Schaaf's 6th in triple jump, Delaney Flanagan's 5th in shot put and Kaysi Parker's 4th in discuss combined for seven more points toward the effort.

The 4x100m relay was the first running event of the day and Alba-Golden's lineup of Cacie Lennon, Kalli Trimble, H. Wylie and Gracie Teel were ready for the starting gun to fire. Their time of 54.44 seconds edged out the flying Lady Hawks by .42 seconds. Not quite two seconds behind were Lady Bulldogs runners Jazmin Rojas, Cristal Plata, Kallie Hoover and Marcee, for a 3rd place finish and 12 more team points for Quitman.

Teel and Trimble were joined by Kamrin Wright and Amanda Stewart for the 4x200m relay, in which their success continued. They got around the 800m race in 1:57.32 to beat out Winnsboro by .63 seconds.

Cacie Lennon ran away with first place in the 100m dash in 13.97 seconds, earning the Lady Panthers' only points on the track without hurdles or batons involved.

In the hurdles, Alba-Golden's Bella Crawford placed 2nd in the 100m and 3rd in the 300m race, while Lady Bulldog hurdler Savana Smith got 5th in each. Marcee won both races, tallying 20 more points for Quitman.

Lady Bulldog sprinters Cristal Plata and Jazmin Rojas finished 4th and 6th respectively in the 200 meters.

Vander Schaaf and Sarah Smith placed 2nd and 5th in the 400 meter race.

Alexa Flores ran the 3200 meters in 14:20 for 4th place.

The final race of the night was the 4x400 meter relay.

While Hawkins had the meet well in hand, second place was still up for grabs. Quitman held a team lead of four points over Alba-Golden, the difference between most scores available in the last run of the event.

Lady Panther runners Kamrin Wright, Lennon, Crawford and Teel lined up in the outside lane right next to the Lady Bulldog team of Vander Schaaf, Savana Smith, Sarah Smith, and Madyson Pence.

By the time three laps had been run, Crawford handed the baton to Teel with a massive lead over third, but neck-and-neck for first with the Lady Hawks. With Quitman's Pence running anchor, Alba-Golden couldn't risk finishing second if they wanted to pass the Ladydogs in the team standings.

Teel did what she had been all evening – closed it out. She finished her four hundred meters four seconds ahead of the Hawkins runner and 17 seconds in front of a galloping Pence, who secured third for Quitman's team.

The final team score totals were:
Hawkins 132
Alba-Golden 98
Quitman 94
Winnsboro 78
TK Gorman 59
Tyler Heat 47
Big Sandy 46
Como-Pickton 42
