Lady Panthers survive comeback
The Alba-Golden Lady Panthers demonstrated a bit of a bipolar personality on their way to a 41-32 win over the visiting Cross Roads Ladycats last Tuesday.
In the first half of play, the home side appeared like a tornado of hands and feet. They trapped, they cut-off passing lanes, they nicked the ball away, again and again.
Cross Roads had difficulty just getting the ball (and keeping the ball) in their offensive zone. The Alba-Golden squad actually forced them from the zone a couple of times.
Once the Lady Panthers gained possession, they went inside. Post Lainey Teel poured in all 12 Alba-Golden points in the opening quarter and chalked up 19 points in the first half.
Teel was certainly challenged inside by her counterpart from Cross Roads, but she posted up with strength and made determined turns to the basket.
Three-pointers by Sadie Wright and Joecey Lewers propelled the Lady Panthers to a 19-point halftime lead.
The second half began as if someone had flicked a light switch. Cross Roads started the half on a 10-0 run. They attacked through the Lady Panthers’ pressure and aggressively drove the basket.
The Lady Panthers, meanwhile, developed a case of bad-pass rash. The home side managed only 5 points in the quarter – a breakaway drive from Lewers and a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Teel.
At the quarter break, it was a 10-point game, and the outcome was far from certain.
The turnover bug continued to plague the Lady Panthers in the final quarter. The play by both teams became more and more frantic as the quarter drew on. Cross Roads had closed the difference to 8 points, but it was as close as they would get.
A key 3-pointer by Jayla Sitar gave the Lady Panthers just the cushion they needed. Some missed lay-ups by the Cross Roads squad late in the fourth quarter also proved critical.
Alba-Golden burned the last three minutes with some hard work in the offensive zone, securing the win.
The Lady Panthers are 4-2 half way through district play, after defeating Frankston on Friday 48-42. After playing Cayuga on Tuesday, the Lady Panthers host LaPoynor on Friday.
