Mabank sweeps Mineola

If the Mineola Lady Jackets wanted a pre-district measure, they got it last Tuesday in Mabank.

Mabank is among the top 4A volleyball teams in East Texas. The Lady Panthers used aggressive striking and great court awareness to take down the Lady Jackets in a three-set match: 25-12, 25-22, 25-16.

The home side generated 15 points off offensive scoring and took advantage of nine Mineola miscues en route to the first set win.

After weathering the storm that was set one, the Lady Jackets decided to make the long bus ride worth their while.

They jetted out to a quick 5-2 lead in the second set. Shylah Kratzmeyer provided both the service run and the activity which sparked the team.

The set was a back-and-forth affair. Tied nine times, the scoring alternated, with neither side gaining a significant advantage.

In a word, the Lady Jackets were scrappy. They denied Mabank the momentum, scrambled in defense, and began to score on their own accord. Their improved court coverage forced Mabank to place drop shots vs. kill shots.

For Mineola, Jocelyn Whitehead, Macy Fischer, Olivia Hughes and Gracie Finley contributed offensive scores. Kenleigh Aguirre chipped in two aces.

The set was tied at 19. Mabank rallied to etch five of the last nine points with offensive striking and take the second match.

Mabank had staved off an excellent challenge from the Lady Jackets in the second set. The Lady Panthers did not allow the momentum to escape again.

They used three 5-point runs to take the third set and the match.

The Lady Jackets conclude their pre-district schedule with a rematch against Canton and a visit to Wills Point. They host Quitman Sept. 24 to open district play.
