Malakoff guns by Alba-Golden Lady Panthers
The Alba-Golden Lady Panthers continue their preparations for district play. They entertained the Malakoff Lady Tigers last Tuesday and fell 73-39 to an accomplished Malakoff side.
The Lady Panthers improve with every outing, and although the score may not suggest it, they showed marked improvement against the Lady Tigers.
Most notably, Alba-Golden is getting results from their backcourt trapping press. Even a team which enjoyed significant height advantage struggled against the Lady Panther press. As with all presses, it must survive the initial trap attempt, and it is that stage of the transition which Alba-Golden must yet shore up.
Malakoff featured a tall (6’2”) post player who was very adept at finishing around the basket. Despite the best efforts of Alexis Wilmut and Lainey Teel, Alba-Golden had no answer to what was clearly the heart of the Malakoff squad.
However, facing such a tall talent allowed Alba-Golden the opportunity to game plan against height. In their offensive zone, the Lady Panthers drew the tall defender to the perimeter and attacked behind her.
The next logical step for the Lady Panthers will be recognizing when they generate a reasonable shot and having the confidence to take that shot without hesitation. That comes with repetition and team cohesiveness.
The Lady Panthers opened district play Tuesday as they hosted Cayuga. They travel to LaPoyner on Friday, Dec. 20 and are next at home on Tuesday, Dec. 31 against Martin’s Mill.
