A Mineola man was killed and three others injured, two seriously, in a two-vehicle crash Friday morning five miles west of Mineola on U.S. Hwy. 80.

According to the Texas Dept. of Public Safety (DPS) preliminary report, Howard Wayne Petrea, 89, was stopped at the northbound intersection of FM 1253 at U.S. 80, just west of the Wood County line.

He resided on FM 1253 just south of the crash site in Smith County, in the Providence community.

Terrance Boyd, 23, of Terrell was eastbound on U.S. 80 in a 70 MPH zone in a 2016 Ford Mustang.

Petrea, driving a 2018 Chevrolet Impala, failed to yield right-of-way, the report said, and the Mustang collided with the driver’s side.

Petrea died at the scene, pronounced by Smith County Justice of the Peace Jon Johnson.

Two passengers in the Impala, Stanley Phillips, 70, and Carol Phillips, 65, both of Fort Worth, suffered incapacitating injuries and were taken to the UT Health main campus in Tyler. They are Petrea’s daughter and son-in-law.

Boyd received non-incapacitating injuries and was taken to Christus Mother Frances hospital in Tyler.

Trooper Kip Staton with DPS Tyler investigated.

Services for Petrea, a retired railroad employee, were held Wednesday morning in Van.
