Man shot after threatening self, deputies
A man shot to death by Wood County sheriff’s deputies on Friday, Nov. 4 southeast of Winnsboro had threatened self-harm prior to being shot following a traffic accident.
According to the custodial death report filed with the Texas Attorney General’s office by Wood County Sheriff’s Lt. Michael Chilson, Timothy Wayne Hodges, 32, of Gilmer was involved in a single vehicle rollover at FM 852 and FM 2088 near Winnsboro at 5:40 p.m. with a male subject reported possibly trying to flee on foot.
The Dept. of Public Safety requested assistance from a closer unit.
“Deputies arrived on scene, located a male driver and directed him to the ambulance to be treated by EMS,” the report stated. “The male driver ran out of the ambulance and retrieved a firearm from his vehicle. The male driver held the firearm to his head and stated to deputies to kill him or he would do it. Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation. During this time, a less-lethal Taser device was deployed at the subject. The less-lethal device was not effective in getting the subject to drop his weapon.
“The subject sat down and continued to point the weapon at his own head. Deputies continued to give verbal commands to the subject to put his weapon down. The subject pointed the firearm at a deputy. The deputy fired his weapon in order to protect his own life, as well as the lives of the other emergency services personnel in the immediate area, injuring the subject. The deputy continued to give verbal commands to the subject and the subject reached for the weapon, causing the deputy to have to fire again. After the subject stopped reaching for the firearm, the deputies rushed in, detained the subject and yelled for paramedics to come to the aid of the subject. The subject was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”
The report lists the preliminary cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds and the type of weapon used as a handgun. The deputies involved are not identified.
It notes that Hodges did not discharge his firearm.
Hodges was a 2008 graduate of Fruitvale High School. Services were Nov. 12 at Liberty Temple Church-Creagleville.
