Though the city of Mineola plans to celebrates its sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) all year long, May is setting up to be an especially busy time, centered around the Spring Fling on Saturday, May 20.

The Mineola Chamber of Commerce will kick off the week with its Savor on the Bricks Tuesday, May 16 along N. Johnson St.

The 20th will include activities throughout the day, starting with a fun run and disc golf tournament at the Mineola Nature Preserve.

Events shift into town to kick off with a parade at 11 a.m. along Broad St.

Two contests will be ongoing, with judging of fashion through the decades at 3 p.m. and the beard contest at 4 p.m.

Sidewalk sales, vendors, music and a beer tent are among highlights for the day.

The Mineola Golf Club will host a day of events to include a car show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The day will conclude with a balloon glow at dusk at the Mineola Civic Center, and an airplane will tow a banner celebrating the event throughout the day.

The morning of May 26 the Mineola High School Class of 2023 will unearth a time capsule buried by their 1998 predecessors and then plant one of their own.

The sesquicentennial royal court will be unveiled at a coronation Saturday, April 29 at the civic center at 6:30 p.m.

Next up July 1 will be a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the brick streets and the 150th anniversary of the completion of the railroads.
