Mineola advances in playoffs
In a game that took a half hour to play the final minute, the Mineola Yellowjackets defeated the Jefferson Bulldogs Thursday at Spring Hill 66-49 to capture the area basketball championship.
With Mineola pulling away late in the game a Jefferson fan altercation forced officials to clear the gym before the final 1:03 could be played. Dawson Pendergrass was at the free throw line for Mineola, missed the shot and Jefferson dribbled out the remainder of the clock.
It was a tale of two halves as Jefferson built a lead in the first half, 31-26. But Pendergrass, who was held in check most of the first half, helped the Jackets get going after halftime with the inside game, and Mineola quickly pulled out in front.
A final Jefferson charge in the fourth quarter was thwarted, as the lead went from 53-47 to 64-47.
Jefferson led 15-11 after the first quarter while Mineola held the third quarter lead 44-38.
Next up for Mineola will be Atlanta, a 56-53 winner over Arp. Their regional quarterfinal matchup is in Hallsville on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $4 at the door.
