Mineola council abandons unused street, OKs beer fest

Posted

The city of Mineola abandoned an unused street right-of-way, approved closing downtown streets for a beer fest and outlined its request to the Meredith Foundation Monday.

The unused portion of Potts St. will revert to the adjacent property owners, Connie Holley and James T. Hollis.

It is located off the end of Ryan St., a dead end running west from Peachtree. It is wooded, and the far end of Ryan is also undeveloped.

Mayor Jayne Lankford said Potts St. will never go through.

The approval was unanimous, after a vote last month denied the closure 4-2.

The beer fest approval for Saturday, April 22 was approved for two blocks, S. Johnson St. and W. Commerce, for the They Got Your Six Foundation, which raises funds to assist veterans.

Marketing Director Owen Tiner said the foundation is responsible for having the correct permits from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, which requires the beer sales to be held in a ticketed, restricted area.

There will be food and information vendors and music, he said. The event is tentatively planned for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A request was approved to close the Mineola Nature Preserve Friday through Sunday, Jan. 13-15 for a Texas Youth Hunt, an activity previously held at the preserve.

The annual requests to the Meredith Foundation total $452,000, with the city’s first choice an emergency management radio and console communications system at $193,500.

Second choice is $89,638 for a tractor camera for water and sewer lines to replace a 13-year-old system.

Third in line is $38,000 for operating funds for the Mineola Historical Museum.

Fourth is $25,000 in marketing funds for the yearlong Mineola sesquicentennial celebration.

Continued work on the walking trail at Iron Horse Square is a request for $21,000, with $30,500 is requested by the pubic works department for a new utility tractor replacing a 1981 model.

ADA playground equipment for $13,027 and $41,375 for a pavilion near the playground at the nature preserve round out the requests.

The council also approved a request by the Wood County Airport board to seek $371,000 for an 8,000-square-foot multi-use hangar that would include overnight airplane storage, event and training space and an emergency operations center and shelter.

The council was advised a replacement is being sought on the airport board for Joel Moore.
