Mineola ISD board hands out recognitions

The Mineola school board meeting Monday, May 15 was filled with recognition.

Superintendent Cody Mize noted that student achievements are limited to state qualifiers, and it still yielded a lengthy list.

Before turning to the students, the board paid tribute to the late John Abbott, who served on the board 12 years and five as president.

New board President Rodney Watkins said Abbott was so passionate, caring, insightful and dedicated. As a former superintendent, the board could rely on Abbott for many things.

Watkins presented a plaque and gift to Janell Abbott.

Outgoing board member Todd Morgan was also honored.

New and returning board member Jay McGough was sworn in to complete a one-year term.

The following students of the month were recognized:

Primary-Pre-K - Elias Vigueras and Kingsley Burciaga

Elementary-5th grade - Gael Rendon and Lydia Spann

Middle-7th grade -Azalea Perez and Francisco Anaya

High school-seniors - Ileana Gomez and Landon Hazelwood

Staff honors included the following:

Support Staff-Seth Capps-police department

High school teacher of year Laura Marder

State qualifiers included the following:

MHS Fishing Team - State Qualifier Jace Tyndell

FFA State Qualifying Teams-Clara Marlow, Carmen Carrasco, Colette Harle, Jayla Johnston (horse judging); Sarah Smith, Gracie Lindley, Sydney Van Cleave, Zoe Goodson (ag sales); Shiloh Fowler, Autumn Grosskipf, Campbell Littlefield, Ella Layne (floriculture); Caroline Anders, Mylee Fischer, Macy Fischer, Fernel Ventura (milk quality products).

UIL Academic State Qualifiers-Ali Jordan (feature writing), Vanessa Veloz (headline writing), Meelah Amason (prose interpretation).

State track and field-Raylie Peebles, Shylah Kratzmeyer, Tanner Hartzog and Carmen Carrasco (1600-meter relay).

Also recognized were 2023 valedictorian Ali Jordan and salutatorian Campbell Littlefield.

The board accepted an additional donation of $5,600 for teacher grants from the Mineola Education Foundation, bringing the total to $80,600 this year.

A donation from the Max and Mary Hudson Trust was accepted for $19,420. Some 19 scholarships were awarded to seniors.

The following new employees were approved by the board:

Madison Brooks - 4th grade science (elementary school) 

Christian Floyd - agriculture science (high school) 

Dalton Dover - teacher/coach (middle school) 

Reagan Fischer - teacher/coach (middle school) 

Kristen Craver - Head Start teacher (primary school) .

The following resignations were accepted:

Kristin Layman (2nd grade teacher- primary school) 

Hillary Davis (agriculture science - high school) 

Ali Moore (special education/teacher - high school/coach) 

Connor Boyette (high school ISS/middle school coach) 

Vicki Sandifer (special education aide - high school).
