Mineola joins districts opposing fed mask rule
Mineola ISD is joining a growing number of school districts around Texas in opposing a federal mandate that 3-4 year old students in the Head Start program wear masks.
Superintendent Cody Mize said the district receives about $100,000 per year to fund the 57 students in the program.
The district could replace that money should the federal funding be withheld for not meeting the mask requirement.
Mize said the greater concern is if the Department of Education tries to tie mask mandates to other federal programs, called title programs, that fund a number of programs and personnel in the district.
“Where does it stop?” he asked.
The requirement was included in a 650-document on the reopening of schools, something Mize pointed out that Mineola already did in 2020 with good success.
The state has said mask wearing for younger students was not appropriate.
Trustees voted to approve the resolution with board member Jill Quiambao abstaining.
