May is here. School is almost over. Do you know what the Mineola Memorial Library has to offer over these lazy days of summer?

Beginning Wednesday, May 28 at 2 p.m., we will offer our summer reading program. This is geared toward children K to 6th grade. Older and younger siblings may attend, but parents will have to help their children with some activities, and older siblings may get volunteer opportunities during programs.

We will begin on May 28 with a kick-off to summer reading where attendees will find out how the program will work and receive a schedule of events. There will be very light refreshments, and the children will get to help with a project for the library and listen to stories.

The summer reading program will end on Wednesday, July 9 with a celebration of making it through the seven weeks. No other programs will be offered during the summer for children. When we end in July, it’s only about a month until school begins.

Regular programs such as Homeschool Heroes and American Girls have wrapped until the fall. Toddler and Preschool programs will continue until May 20 and 21, respectively, and then will cease until fall.

A great big thank you to all who have participated in our fundraisers during April: cookie sales, book sales and East Texas Giving Day. You all were awesome. Another thank you for those who attended our movie night on May 13 viewing “Secondhand Lions” at the Select Theater.

We have four HVAC units that heat and cool our library. A big thank you to our repairmen who quickly ordered and installed the replacement for the unit that served us faithfully for 24 years. It was something that needed to be done but came with a price tag. If you would like to make a donation specifically to the HVAC repair, we would appreciate that donation.

Remember, the Mineola Memorial Library is a 501(c)3, non-profit and it is not supported by city or county taxes. It is also not a department of the city or county. Your donations mean a lot to us and they matter.
