October is finally here! Lot’s of things to look forward to – cooler temperatures, Halloween and a time change.

Hispanic Heritage Month is Sept. 15 until Oct. 15. We have set up some displays of books by Hispanic authors, with a Hispanic theme or about some countries. Try authors like Isabel Allende or Sandra Cisneros. Learn about the countries of Chile or Brazil. Read about Sylvia Acevedo in her book “Path to the Stars: My Journey afrom Girl Scout to Rocket Scientist.”

Banned Books Week (Sept. 27 to Oct. 3). We have displays of books that have been challenged or banned in other places. Everyone may read what they wish to read. What is acceptable in one household may not be acceptable in another household. Like other libraries, the Mineola Memorial Library tries to offer a variety of materials so everyone can find their book.

Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. will be the first meeting of the American Girls Historical Reading group. This year, you must register to attend, and one parent must be present and participate with their child. If your name is not on the registration list, you will not be admitted which includes unexpected company. We can accommodate eight girls with a parent (one parent per child) and still practice social distancing. To register for American Girls, call the library at 903-569-2767.

Watch our next column for information about Crazy 8s Math Club. This is an 8-week program for children in K-2 grade and for children in 3-5 grades. Registration will be required and limited. There will be one group of younger children and one group of older children. Details are still being finalized. Please, stay tuned.

Remember when you visit to please, wear a mask, keep your distance, and stay away if you are not feeling well. We ask that you limit your visit to one hour or less per day to allow everyone an opportunity to visit the library. Our hours are Tuesday 9-6, Wednesday 9-2, Thursday 9-6, Friday 9-2 and Saturday 9-2. We offer curbside service during operating hours if you would prefer your items to be delivered to you. WiFi is available 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. from the comfort of your own vehicle.

We are not accepting material donations at this time due to a lack of space. Your financial donations are still accepted and appreciated. Mineola Memorial Library is a501(c)3, non-profit.
