Summer has begun! And we are so very glad so many people are visiting the library. Our new trees and flower beds are welcoming visitors to the library.

Tuesday, May 31 we began our summer by visiting the Mineola Primary and Elementary students. We did a quick program about ocean layers and density, then they were given the opportunity to borrow books. They will be participating in the Summer Reading events through the school and will receive Brag Tags to commemorate their efforts.

Wednesday, June 1 brought over a dozen toddlers with parents to Toddler Story Time followed by our first Summer Reading event in the library. About 23 children created a seaside art project and learned about ocean layers and density. Next week, they will show their reading efforts and soon, the public will see schools of fish hanging from the ceiling created by the children’s reading efforts.

Summer Reading is made possible by generous donations such as the Twentieth Century Club, Mineola Texas Star, CNB Bank and some private citizens.

These donations are used to purchase rewards for reading and for supplies to present these programs. We are so blessed to have a community that recognizes the importance of reading and the library’s efforts encouraging reading.

There is a special event scheduled Tuesday, June 28, the Texas A&M Chemistry Road Show. This show is geared for children ages 8 and older with adult caregivers for those under 12 years of age. It is scheduled in the Mineola Elementary Gym for 1 p.m.

Please, watch our Facebook page and website for further details as the date approaches. This is free to the public and is presented with a grant bringing this program to Mineola through the Mineola Memorial Library and the generosity of the Mineola ISD allowing us to use their facilities.

Remember, the Mineola Memorial Library is a 501(c)3, non-profit and your donations may be tax-deductible. We received a donation in memory of Jeanene Upton by Garold Dhondt.
