Becky Moore has been recommended as a new board member of the Mineola Economic Development Corp.

The MEDC board accepted the resignation of Barbara Dawson Thursday and will recommend Moore to the city council for final approval.

Dawson has served on the MEDC board for 16 years.

Moore, who recently retired from Texas Farm Bureau Insurance, has been active in many community projects, such as Caring and Sharing and the Mineola Education Foundation. She serves as president of the Mineola Kiwanis Club.

The board gave its approval to the proposed 2022-23 budget of $1,319,973. It will go to the council for final approval, which will be considered along with the city budget.

MEDC Executive Director Mercy Rushing presented a sales tax analysis to the board covering the last 18 months.

The MEDC is funded by a half-cent sales tax.

During that time the city collected $4,315,860 in sales taxes (with the total two-cent city sales tax), and 64% of that came from the top eight categories, led by department stores at $1,112,467; full service restaurants at $412,263; pre-fab metal buildings and components, $392,983; other building materials delivered, $217,460; gasoline stations (convenience stores), $183,005; electronic shopping, $153,654; limited service restaurants, $152,495 and all other general merchandise stores, $139,349.
