Mt. Vernon stops Mineola Lady Jackets 41-33

The opening quarter of the Lady Jackets’ 41-33 loss to the Mt. Vernon Lady Tigers last Tuesday featured careening action, as neither team could finish at the basket. That initial quarter ended with the score 6-2, Mt. Vernon.

Perhaps each team was too hyped to play the game. They had shared a thriller earlier in the season.

Mineola had the momentum early. On the opening possession, Mylee Fischer collected two offensive rebounds and lassoed five in the quarter. Despite forcing a 5-second inbound violation, and great hustle which created Mt. Vernon turnovers, the Jackets could not find the basket. Two 3-pointers from Mt. Vernon established the initial lead.

The Lady Jackets seemed to maintain a good surge of energy in the second quarter. They drove the ball and found themselves at the free throw line often. Their first half free throw shooting was lacking. Had they knocked down those shots, the game would have been near even at the half-time break.

The Lady Jackets seemed somewhat snake bit on the night. Near the end of the half, the ball bounced off a Lady Jackets’ foot as she drove an open baseline. It was just not a good night for the home side.

As it was, however, the Lady Tigers took a 14-6 lead into half-time.

The game was not a clean basketball game. If the referees had called all the obvious fouls, the game could have still been going on. They did whistle many calls, but it did not seem to deter either team from hacking on the inside and reaching on the outside.

The game picked up in the second half. Macy Fischer began to find seams to drive, while Mylee Fischer used a strong first step to go to the hoop from the low post. Kapri Riley had her second of two outstanding assists on the night.

Mineola was able to close to within four points in the third but gave up a 5-0 run to the Lady Tigers to close out the third quarter.

The Lady Jackets put in their best basketball in the final quarter. They generated shots and were 100% from the free throw line. Each time the Lady Jackets challenged the score however, Mt. Vernon connected on a 3-pointer.

A Mt. Vernon offensive rebound off of a missed foul shot in the last minute effectively ended the game.

After starting 2-2 in district play, the Lady Jackets traveled Tuesday to Harmony and host Chapel Hill Friday.
