Mural celebrating the Musgraves family OK’d

The Mineola Landmark Commission has approved a new mural in the downtown historic district to grace the north wall of MPrints Printing and Graphics along Kilpatrick at N. Johnson.

The Flint and Steel Coalition’s Wood County Walls project collaborated with the Musgraves family (owners of MPrints) on the design, which is planned to be painted the first week in May.

The design by muralist Luis Valle, who worked with Wood County Walls on the unity wall mural on S. Pacific last year, pays tribute to the music, art and design legacies of the Musgraves family.

Flint and Steel’s Todd Witt presented the request Thursday, April 13. The four prominent features include Willie Nelson, from a portrait painted by Karen Musgraves that has hung in the Country Music Hall of Fame, and with whom Grammy-winning performer Kacey Musgraves has toured.

Next is a guitar based on one of Kacey’s guitars.

A vine connects the mural and includes a chrysalis, part of the transformation of butterflies.

And finally several butterflies, a nod to one of Kacey’s songs. It will serve as a selfie spot.

Witt said two selfie trails are being developed across the county, one for wings and the other for Texas.

The wings trail can be of any winged creature, with the idea that travelers can seek out selfies at all the locations.

The Texas selfie spots will have the letter “X” missing so that selfies can be made.

One is planned at the Mineola Dairy Queen from the popular slogan “That’s what I like about Texas.”

It is one of several murals being planned on the DQ property.

Plans are for painting the MPrints mural to begin May 1 and dedicate it during the May Fiesta Saturday, May 6.

Valle worked with the four members of the Musgraves family on the design, Karen, Craig, Kacey and Kelly.

A second mural is planned on the back (west) wall of MPrints being designed by Kelly and Kacey to feature three of Kacey’s songs.

The mural is funded by the Wood County Economic Development Commission, the Mineola Economic Development Corp. and the Musgraves family.

A mural festival is being planned leading up to the Iron Horse Heritage Festival in Mineola Sept. 23, with murals to be dedicated around the county.
