New commissioner gets right to work
New Wood County Commissioner Justin Bowring got broken in quickly on Tuesday.
At his first meeting since being sworn in to represent Precinct One on Jan. 1, Bowring had to make or second every motion, as Precinct Two Commissioner Jerry Gaskell and Precinct Three Mike Simmons were away for training.
Bowring and Precinct Four Commissioner Russell Acker approved all the mostly routine items presented Tuesday.
They included approving stop-loss insurance for the county’s self-funded employee health insurance plan and seeking a proposal for inmate communications in the county jail.
The contract with the Sabine River Authority for the county to host the Bassmasters fishing tournament in May also met approval, along with the continuing grant with the state to provide crime victims’ services.
Leach Woods East was approved in Precinct 1 for a six-lot subdivision off County Road 1560.
County Judge Kevin White announced that with impending wintry weather Thursday and Friday, county offices would follow the lead of Quitman schools for decisions about closing operations.
