No downtown Mineola trunk-or-treat but businesses may hand out candy

The annual trunk-or-treat for Halloween in downtown Mineola will not be held as an officially-sponsored event this year.

Chamber of commerce board members decided last week not to pursue the event which was going to require additional safety measures due to the restrictions on large gatherings due to COVID-19.

The chamber has requested that businesses in the downtown area that wish to pass out treats for Halloween contact the chamber, which will be compiling a list of participating businesses. The list of participants will be posted later in October.

The next planned event for the chamber will be the annual Christmas parade, which is scheduled for the evening of Saturday, Dec. 5.

It will follow the newly-adopted parade route which begins at Broad and Graham Streets and proceeds west along Broad St. to the area of the  Broad St. Church of Christ at Stone St. No after-parade gatherings are allowed.

That route was used last Friday afternoon for the Mineola High School homecoming parade.

Mayor Kevin White commented at Monday’s special city council meeting that the increased route length allowed parade goers to socially distance while enjoying the event.

City Manager Mercy Rushing noted that the Sept. 26 benefit pub crawl held in downtown Mineola went off without a hitch and had a good turnout. A city block along N. Johnson was blocked off to help participants socially distance.
