Panthers beaten by Boles

Playoff hopes halted

The Alba-Golden Panthers met Quinlan-Boles Hornets at the Rains Junior High gym in Emory Saturday afternoon to compete for the final fourth-place playoff spot in District 10-2A. After both teams defended their home courts in the regular season and finished with 3-7 district records, a closely fought game ended with a 54-45 score, sending Boles to the postseason.

The Panthers dominated the boards early, but could not take advantage of the numerous offensive rebounds following their many missed shots. Boles went up 5-0 before Alba-Golden scored more than three minutes into the game.

With just under two minutes remaining in the opening quarter, the Panthers took an 8-7 lead.

The period ended much as it began, with two offensive rebounds and two missed shots. Alba-Golden trailed 11-10 after eight minutes.

The next eight were back-and-forth with the score remaning tight. The Panthers grabbed a four-point lead late, but fouled a shooter in the waning second to give him three free throws. The Hornet made them all, closing the halftime margin to one, 24-23, Alba-Golden leading.

A couple of loose passes and missed rebound chances to open the half hurt the Panthers. Boles applied full-court pressure that Alba-Golden struggled to break and soon resulted in a 30-23 lead for the Hornets.

The Panthers battled back to within four points during the third quarter.

Three missed field goals to open the fourth followed by a turnover hampered Alba-Golden's comeback effort.

With the following possession, the Panthers show patience, working the ball until Will Hartin found an open Kyle Kennedy, who buried a three-pointer to make it 46-39 Boles.

Hartin would hit a three with 3:30 remaining to bring the score to 50-42, where it would remain for nearly two minutes, when the Hornets used a timeout with 1:34 on the clock.

Blake Weissert was able to force Boles ball carriers to travel twice in the closing minutes, then hit a three-point shot with 37 seconds left to close the gap to 50-45.

One Hornet bucket followed by an errant pass saw the end of Alba-Golden's playoff prospects.

Hartin finished with 12 points while Weissert scored 11 and Kyle Kennedy had nine. Jack Patton put up six points and swatted down five blocks. Kaden Kennedy contributed four points and Brayden Randolph hit a three-pointer.
