Panthers end year with victory
The Alba-Golden Panthers put an exclamation mark on their 2024 campaign with a 40-7 victory over the Boles Hornets Friday at Boles Home.
The Panthers played with a free-wheeling sense of abandon and just kept coming at the Hornets throughout the evening. They amassed 407 yards of offense, split evenly between the first and second half.
Alba-Golden outgained the Hornets at almost a 4:1 ratio, although each team ran 57 plays from scrimmage.
The Panthers wasted no time getting started. On the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Sam Olson lateraled to Cameron Lennon. Lennon arced a pass back to Olson who was escorted down the right side by five blockers. The play went 63 yards for a score.
On the Hornets first play from scrimmage Brandt Peterson jarred the ball loose from a Hornet running back, and the Panthers took over. Those two plays pretty much summed up the game for both sides.
After exchanging punts, Alba-Golden scored on another 1-play drive. This time it was Lennon taking a hand off 50 yards for a score.
At the quarter break Alba-Golden was driving and held a 14-0 lead.
The Panthers finished that drive with a flea-flicker. Olson handed off to Brett Sutton on an end around who then pitched back to Boogie Trimble deep in the backfield.
Trimble got absolutely leveled on the play, but he was able to deliver an accurate pass to Olson for the score.
On the next offensive snap by Boles, Wyatt Sutton literally stole the ball from a Hornet runner trying to gain the edge. He sprinted untouched for a 42-yard defensive touchdown.
The first half ended with a flurry of back-to-back turnovers, but no further scoring. The Panthers took a 26-0 lead into halftime.
The boys at Boles Home came out with renewed vigor in the second half. They moved the ball to the Panthers’ goal line before turning it over on downs.
Alba-Golden burned up most of the quarter with a long drive but produced no points.
Early in the fourth quarter, Lennon had one last signature run in his Panther gridiron career.
He burst through the middle of the line, split the contact of two linebackers, powered through and split the closing tackle of two safeties. Two plays later LB Jones scored untouched from 8 yards out.
Boles salvaged some pride by scoring on a 9-play drive after a great kick-off return.
Alba-Golden mustered one last drive, giving senior Brandt Peterson an opportunity to carry the ball into the end zone.
He was not going to be denied and crashed across the line for the final points of the season.
This group of senior Panthers concluded the season: Ayden Blalock, Cameron Lennon, Brandt Peterson, Wyatt Sutton, Garrett Wright, Kaden Riley, Nikolai Kent, Pierce Phillips, Hector Delgadillo and Jaxen Carver.
