Panthers in playoffs despite loss

Posted

The Frankston Indians came to town and used a relentless attacking offensive game to give the Alba-Golden Panthers a 61-37 loss.

The tone was set early. Frankston rattled off nine unanswered points with a 3-pointer, a break off the press, an offensive rebound put-back and a jump shot from the lane.

LB Jones got the Panthers on the board with a short jumper at the 3:42 mark of the opening quarter. As the quarter drew to a close, there was a second indicator – the Panthers misfired on three consecutive offensive rebound put-backs in front of the rim.

At the break it was a 9-point game, when the halftime horn sounded it was a 19-point margin.

Frankston employed a well-practiced zone press which caused difficulties for the home side throughout the game. Equally effective for the Indians, however, was a very efficient offense. The Indians usually generated a shot within four passes.

As they always do, the Panthers competed as if it was the NBA finals. On this particular night, the identity of the Panthers as competitors was best illustrated by senior Brandt Peterson.

When not outracing the other nine players on the court, Peterson went to the basket. He scored on two drives and two 8-foot bank shots. He pitched in a free throw to finish the night with 9 points.

Blake Harris led the Panthers with 10 points, Sam Olson added 7, Boogie Trimble 6, Jones 3 and Cameron Lennon 2.

After Friday’s 47-35 victory over Cayuga to secure a playoff spot, the Panthers closed the regular season Tuesday at LaPoynor. Bidistrict playoffs begin Monday and Tuesday.
