Pilot Club marks a century since its founding

Posted

Mayor Jayne Lankford proclaimed the week of Oct. 17-23 as Pilot International Founders Week in Mineola. Pilot International was founded in Macon, Ga. in October 1921 and is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Pilot members strive to further the organization’s humanitarian efforts through scholarships and grants to support research, education and community care-giving. Pilot is committed to service in areas of brain safety and health and supporting those who care for others.

Celebration of the 100th year began during the Pilot International Conference in Atlanta, Ga. last July. A trip was taken to Pilot headquarters in Macon where members viewed rooms, wall awards and bricks in the garden that they had donated. Throughout the convention Pilots heard the history of their achievements culminating with a giant birthday cake at the banquet on Saturday night. During October, Pilots worldwide had  programs and ceremonies to celebrate the event. A special dinner will be held in Macon to recognize that first chartering event with the 40 women who founded Pilot International.

Pilot International has 305 clubs and over 5,800 members worldwide. There are three clubs in Wood County, including Mineola, Quitman, and Winnsboro. The Mineola Pilot Club has served this community for 56 years. Pilot fosters volunteerism in more than 6,500 young people worldwide through its sponsorship of Anchor and Compass Clubs for high school and college youth.

In Mineola, Pilot members are involved with BrainMinder presentations in the schools, the Alzheimer’s Walk, Project Lifesaver for those with brain disorders that cause wandering, camps for adults with traumatic brain injuries, patriotic essay contests and many other projects.
