Program on Caddos in Wood County set

The Wood County Historical Commission will host a free program on the “History of Caddo Indians in Wood County” by Dr. Thomas Guderjen and Mark Walters on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 2-4 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library, 202 E. Goode St.  

After the program, there will be an archeological activity for children.  Refreshments and cookies will be available and door prizes will be given away. For additional information, contact the historical commission at wchtx@yahoo.com.

Guderjen is chairman of Department of Social Sciences (which houses anthropology, criminal justice, economics, geography, public administration and sociology) at the University of Texas at Tyler and an associate professor of anthropology. He is an archaeologist with research themes that include agricultural production, trade and urban organization of the ancient Mayans. He has directed an annual field project in Central America that trains more than 100 students for 25 years. He also directs the new Center for Social Science Research at UT-Tyler which is dedicated to supporting the university’s mission through faculty-based and client-based research. He serves as president of the board of the Camp Tyler Foundation which operates a camp for children and an outdoor school in Smith County.

Walters is a private archaeologist who has conducted research of Indian living sites and relics associated with these sites in East Texas. He has been published in several scholastic publications.
