QDC hires landscaping firm for parking lot
The Quitman Development Corporation board voted to hire a company to do landscape work on the parking lot north of the downtown square Monday. The Turner Land Management bid of $6,800 was approved to make the improvements on the parking lot which serves downtown. It was the only bid received.
QDC executive director Rodney Kieke said, “It is $6,800 to do rock, pull out all of the shrub and smaller plants but leave the trees.”
Turner Land Management’s Carson Turner told Kieke they could get on the project in 30 days after approval.
Board member Brad Medlin was in favor of going ahead and getting this project done. “If we can get somebody in there in 30 days, my opinion is that we jump on it. That’s going to make it easier to maintain,” Medlin noted. Medlin made the motion to accept the bid and it passed unanimously.
The board also discussed Dr. Greg Eberhart’s efforts to have crosswalks painted by Quitman High School art students.
“As I submitted, they said they do allow some things in between the lines of a crosswalk, but they have to be very uniform. Maybe we can do some city crosswalks. We just can’t do them on the highways,” Eberhart said.
The board then discussed the possibilities of doing murals on some of the buildings in the city. They talked about the wall on the side of Jan’s Restaurant and Grill as well as the wall on the west side of the Quitman Police Department. Any type of mural would have to be approved by building owners.
Kieke reported there are still funds available for the sign and façade grants. The signs at Texas Timberworks in the business park and Peralta’s Mexican Restaurant have been completed.
Kieke reported a new boutique was moving into the downtown square area in the near future but had no details.
