QISD board calls for $30 million bond vote
ously to call for a bond election in a Monday night meeting that lasted less than two minutes.
Board member Todd Williams made the initiating motion, and it was seconded by Vanessa Simpkins.
The bond will go to fund the addition of elementary and junior high classrooms, the updating of the junior high girls’ locker rooms, and constructions of a new field house, career tech center and baseball field.
According to QISD Superintendent Chris Mason, the total needed for the project is $30,835,000, which comes out to a 11.56-cent increase in the school property tax rate.
Citizens of Quitman will vote on whether to adopt the bond in the upcoming election, which will be held on May 3. The last day to register to vote is April 3, and early voting is from April 21-29.
Mason has mentioned in the past that voters age 65 and older who have applied and for and received the over 65 homestead exemption will see no school property tax increase over their frozen dollar amount as a result of this bond.
