QISD board extends superintendent’s contract
Quitman ISD school board members unanimously approved a contract for Superintendent Rhonda Turner Monday.
Turner’s contract was extended through 2026 and her salary was set at $145,000. Turner, a Quitman graduate, has served as superintendent for the past eight years and is in her ninth year at the helm of QISD. This is a straight salary and Turner is reimbursed for travel. She does not get stipends such as phone and car allowance.
January is School Board Appreciation month, and students from each grade level at Quitman Elementary School made cards for each board member.
Turner was complimentary of the QISD board. “We have the best school board around because no matter what, when our kids need something, you guys always find a way, and that does not happen in other districts,” Turner claimed.
Board member Jane Herring said, “I appreciate every one of you. I appreciate your talents and contributions. No matter what I say, I love y’all to death. I really appreciate where we are and what we have done as a team of eight since 2011. I count our blessings often.”
The board approved a resolution for the extension of COVID pay. Employees are eligible for 10 days leave.
“If you use your 10 days in the fall, you don’t get an additional 10 days in the spring, it’s 10 days total,” Turner said.
The board tabled the call for election of QISD board trustees.
“We do not have our times and dates from the county yet. We will take no action tonight, but we will have to call a special meeting in the next week,” Turner said.
Three positions are up on the board.
