QISD board OKs AC bids

Posted

The cafeteria at Quitman Elementary School will soon be cooler after the school board approved air conditioning at Monday night’s meeting.

New QISD head of maintenance Robert Owens brought three bids before the board. The low bid of $14,200 by Garland Indoor Comfort was accepted. The other bids were $14,315 from ETR and $19,163 from Ray Roberts.

Superintendent Rhonda Turner reported the district has 1,202 students on all campuses. This is the first time in district history QISD has gone over the 1,200 mark. The breakdown on each campus is 588 at elementary school, 242 in the junior high and 372 at high school.

Athletic Director Shane Webber presented an updated version of the athletic handbook with a few changes.

“When I got here there were some things in the athletic handbook that seemed like it discouraged kids from coming out for athletics. We wanted to make it so our students would want to come back into the program,” Webber said. “Right now we have 110 in boys athletics and 85 to 90 girls. In junior high we have 68 boys and 62 of them are playing football and that’s a great number. The changes were made to encourage kids to come back out and get involved in our program.”

The board approved a budget amendment for the new Daktronics scoreboard at the football field. They have been waiting on one part that is on back order. The part is essential to the audio on the scoreboard. A temporary solution to add audio has been installed and the new scoreboard should be working at homecoming next week.
