QISD voters easily OK $30 million upgrades
The two bond propositions by the Quitman Independent School District were easily approved by voters Saturday.
Prop. 1 passed 459-227 and Prop. 2 by a 435-255 count. The two combined will fund $30 million in improvements throughout the district.
Three Mineola school board seats were up for grabs, and the top three vote getters were incumbent Jill Quiambao with 257, incumbent Glen Dossett with 214 and Kendall Banks with 172. Mike Sorenson received 163 votes, Jennifer Abercrombie 120 and Darlene Nicholson 78.
The board members were to be sworn in Tuesday.
The city of Hawkins lone contested city council seat goes to Jacque Burns with 77 votes to 65 for Norma Oglesby.
Kirk Price in Place 2 and Dan Spence in Place 3 were elected without opposition.
In the city of Winnsboro election, Randy Parrish edged Jimmy Carl Davis for mayor 119-111.
For two city council seats, Trevor King received 153 votes and Brenda Morey 111 to earn election. Brandon Davidson received 77.
Ramey Water District’s bid to switch to a special utility district failed 67-41.
Quitman ISD proposition No. 1 for $27,850,000 will fund a career and technology education center for $10.9 million, classroom additions at the elementary and junior highs for $9.11 million, athletic field house addition for $6.14 million and locker room renovations for $1.7 million.
The second proposition is for a new baseball field for $2,985,000.
“We sincerely thank the Quitman community and voters for their strong support and shared commitment to the future of our schools and students,” said QISD Superintendent Chris Mason. “We are also grateful to the many individuals and groups who supported this initiative in countless ways.”
Among those are the Long-Range Facility Planning Committee, the school board and QISD’s media specialist.
The school board will meet on Friday to canvass the votes. Following that, the district’s bond counsel will begin meeting to plan and implement the sale of the bonds.
The cities of Alba, Quitman, Mineola and Yantis had no contested seats and canceled their elections as did the Alba-Golden, Quitman, Winnsboro, Yantis and Hawkins school districts.
Paul Kelbe will be the new mayor of Alba, and Donna Landsdowne joins the council. Incumbent Debi Shaddox returns.
Incumbents returning to the Mineola City Council are Mayor Jayne Lankford and council members Terry Eaton in Ward One, Jack Newman in Ward Two and Mitch Tuck in Ward Three.
Quitman Mayor Randy Dunn and council members Brad Medlin and David Dobbs return and had no opposition.
Quitman School Board incumbents returning include Raymond Reek, Todd Williams and Vanessa Simpkins.
Returning Alba-Golden ISD incumbents are Dwayne Ellis and Matt Haisten.
Yantis school board returning members are April Johnson and Jeff Quinn.
Brandon Green and Billy Saucier return to the Winnsboro school board.
Scott McKamie, Tyler Turrentine, Ashey Conner and Tim Dumas (unexpired term) were returned to the Hawkins School Board without opposition, after an additional candidate dropped out for an improperly filled-out application.
City of Yantis incumbents Mayor Trey Norris and council members Julie Mattox and Reed Gammill also return and were unopposed.
