Quilt club to present Mineola museum program
In honor of Black History Month, the Pleasant Hill Quilt Club will present its program on the secret Underground Railroad quilt codes.
The program is sponsored by the Mineola Historical Museum and will be held at the First United Methodist Church Ministries Center, 612 N. Newsom, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5. Admission is free; refreshments will be served.
The club members dress in historical garb and retell the story of how the codes embroidered into the quilts helped guide escaped slaves north during the Civil War era.
The club meets weekly at the Pleasant Hill Community Center, which is housed in the former Pleasant Hill Black school in Linden.
They have been giving presentations since 2004 through songs and oral history. Proceeds from their quilts and performances help maintain the building.
