Quilts of Valor presentation on Veterans Day at the courthouse

Posted

The Quilts of Valor Foundation will team up with Stitchin’ Heaven Quilt Shop on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. to honor veterans by awarding them with a quilt in a ceremony at the Wood County courthouse. Quilts will be on display at 10 a.m. prior to the ceremony.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation has been honoring service members since 2003, when founder Catherine Roberts started the organization after her son was deployed to Iraq. Roberts’ dream is now a nationwide organization of people who donate their time and materials to making quilts. A Quilt of Valor is awarded, not gifted, which is a distinction that the organization wants people to know.

As of Oct. 2, the Quilts of Valor Foundation has awarded over 283,000 quilts to service members and living veterans nationwide.

Stitchin’ Heaven has been a supporter of the Quilts of Valor Foundation for more than a decade. During that time, the store has hosted many sewing days and award ceremonies. During this ceremony, led by Texas State Coordinator Suzanne DiCarlo, each honoree is awarded a quilt that was handmade just for them. They are then wrapped in the quilt to signify love and healing.
