Quitman chamber seeks to fill long-vacant post

Posted

The Quitman Chamber of Commerce is actively seeking to fill the leadership position of executive director. The position has been open since the departure of Elizabeth Nuens in June 2020.

Chamber volunteers have been doing their best to fill in at the various duties dividing them among themselves, but the need for an executive director has become priority.

The chamber has the opportunity to move from its current headquarters to share an office with the Quitman Development Corporation (QDC) at 405 E. Lipscomb behind city offices at the city hall annex. No decision has been made by the chamber on the possible move. The QDC and the city are on board with the chamber moving to the location. The chamber office is located at Jim Hogg City Park.

The chamber is looking for someone who loves Quitman and is willing to work 35 to 40 hours a week with occasional weekend events. The job includes not only regular chamber activities and ribbon-cuttings but also keeping up with memberships, adding new members, managing social media, along with coordination of bank deposits and check requests with the chamber’s accounting firm.

The new director will keep a presence in and around the chamber while maintaining the office and answering chamber phone calls. The job also includes being available for sub-committee meetings, giving status updates to the board and recording minutes from the monthly chamber board meetings.

Chamber board director Scott Dunson is excited about finding a new executive director. “Do you love Quitman and do you want to make a difference in your community?” Dunson asked. “If you are dependable and personable, we have the job for you.”

Chamber board director Ila Wisdom is looking forward to finding a new director. “One of the things we need to work at with all our members is better communication. We need to get the word out we are looking for a new executive director,” Wisdom noted.

About 100 businesses belong to the chamber representing small firms to large corporate businesses.
