Quitman girls get the best of A-GHS Lady Panthers
The Quitman Lady Bulldogs spoiled Alba-Golden’s home season-opener by taking the Lady Panthers 51-34 last Tuesday.
The opening few minutes of the game were literally breathless, as both teams raced up and down the court swapping turnovers.
As is common in the early season, each team appeared to be hyperventilating.
That was not due to being out of shape, but rather due to the adrenalin pumping through the teams at the beginning of the season.
A 3-pointer by Joecey Lewers opened the scoring for Alba-Golden. Jayla Sitar followed shortly thereafter with another long-range shot, and the Lady Panthers took a 6-0 lead.
The Lady Panthers largely owned the opening quarter. They did it with great ball movement in the offensive end and pesky heads-up defense.
The game, however, was decided on the boards. The Lady Bulldogs bring a great combination of team talents, the most noteworthy is excellent rebounding.
Time and again, Quitman was able to generate second and third shot attempts by owning the area around the basket.
The score line bears this out, as post Allie Berry tallied 10 points and winger Cason Autumn recorded 11. Berry’s four second-half scores were offensive rebound put-backs.
The Lady Panthers took a 16-12 lead after one quarter of play, but Quitman rallied.
A smartly-executed zone press forced multiple turnovers by the home side and fueled a 14-point Quitman run as the half drew to a close.
The third quarter was largely a draw as both teams sought to define the art of the possible with their current squads against staunch opposition.
The Lady Bulldogs exerted their will in the final quarter, outscoring the Lady Panthers 11-3.
For local basketball fans the season should be full of excellent basketball from both of these schools.
Alba-Golden’s back-court combination of Joecey Lewers and freshman Jayla Sitar will present all opponents a tough challenge.
The Lady Bulldogs of Quitman have excellent physicality and operate a well-designed zone press. They also play with their heads up as if it were already mid-season.
