Quitman ISD school board members unanimously approved $26,703 for the purchase of 100 new Chromebooks Monday. They will be issued to incoming freshmen next fall as the current class of seniors will be keeping their Chromebooks when they graduate.

Each Chromebook will cost $267 and from Southern Computer Warehouse which had the low bid of three submitted.

The board approved an order of election for the May 7 school board election. The incumbents in the race are Doug Cameron and James Hicks. Early voting will begin April 25 and end May 3. Voting will be done at the Wood County Annex just southwest of the courthouse.

In other business the board approved the request for the Texas Summer Mandate waiver and renewed the contract with GoGuardian.

Also approved by the board is a $22,500 agreement with Capturing Kids Hearts Leadership Blueprint training. “The administrators in our district are going to go through intensive two-day training,” Superintendent Rhonda Turner said. “This leadership training will be in February and we do have grants to cover this.”

Agriculture instructor Brant Lee gave the board a short presentation on the success the FFA program has been at QISD. He reported there are 250 students, or two-thirds of the QHS student body, involved in some sort of ag classes and the various activities available through the agriculture program. It was also noted that Quitman Junior High already has 98 students involved in FFA and agriculture opportunities.

The board voted unanimously to extend Turner’s contract for one year with a base salary of $150,100.

“Rhonda Turner has done a great job for us. We are fortunate to have a leader like her who has moved our district along further into the future,” board member Michael Hipp said.
