Quitman looking at two junior high bands next school year

The Quitman School Board was entertained by three selections from the junior high band program.

Band Director Michael Barron talked about the growth of the program at the junior high level. “The junior program last year had 36 kids in it and that was a combination of seventh and eighth graders.

This group now has 82 students,” Barron said. “Next year we are looking at separating the seventh and eighth graders. Thank you to the school board for allowing us to get all the instruments we needed for our students.”

Superintendent Chris Mason reported there are 1,223 students in the district. He reported the remodeling of the IT department has been completed and is in operation.

The board approved a resolution and agreement regarding extracurricular status of the Wood County 4-H organization.

The board approved a memorandum of understanding with Tyler Junior College for dual credit classes.

The board also approved the certification of Mason to the Region VII advisory committee.

The board approved an order declaring unopposed candidates elected to the board and canceled the May 6 election. Incumbent Vanessa Simpkins and former board member James Hicks will serve in those two spots. Incumbent Jane Herring decided not to seek another term on the board.

The board also approved the selection of Rutherford, Taylor & Company, P.C. as district auditors for the year ending Aug. 31, 2023.
