Quitman, Mineola cross country teams advance

Cross country runners from all three area high schools will be headed to regional competition after a great showing at the district meets last week. 

The Quitman and Mineola boys and girls cross country teams each qualified for regionals based on the Quitman’s second place finishes and Mineola’s teams third places.

The top three teams qualify for the regional meet.

Lady Bulldog Katie de Gorostiza continued her excellent season by taking the blue ribbon of the girls 3,200-meter race in 11 minutes, 26 seconds. She and teammates McKenna Wood (11:59-5th), Braleigh Wood (12:07-6th) and Jadea Comenux (12:25-8th) also qualified based on their individual times.

Mineola’s Olivia Hughes (11:46) and Raylie Peebles (12:30) finished second and ninth respectively to earn their individual ticket to regionals. 

Additional Lady Bulldogs finishers were Christina Plata (13:04), Cooper Marcee (13:14) and Isabella Crockett (14:39). For Mineola, Caroline Castleberry (12:49), Yareli Hernandez (13:11), Emilee Vega (13:22), Destiny Gandy (14:01) and Brienna Palacios (14:08) rounded out the team.

Three runners – Quitman’s Enrique Olvera (15:31-6th) and Mineola’s Eddie Lucas (16:05-9th) and Preston Haskins (16:09-10th) – earned individual spots at regionals based on finishing in the top ten. 

The team qualifications for both schools in the boys’ three-mile run is the result of the combined efforts of the whole team.

For Quitman that was Saul Flores (16:26), Jairo Salinas (16:40), Juan Ramirez (18:05), Anthony Rojas (18:11) and Armando Mendoza (18:59).

Kaleb Silverio (17:25), Sebastion Klodnicki (17:53), Cesar Hernandez (18:16), Miguel Gonzalez (20:02) and Alfredo Hurst (20:03) completed the Yellowjacket team. 

Three Alba-Golden athletes will also be making the trip to regionals. Freshmen Peyton Clark (13:57) and Briana Ringgold (14:36) finished fourth and 10th place in the girls 3,200-meter run.

In the boys’ race, senior Brandt Peterson finished third with a time of (19:46). 

Additional Alba-Golden runners who competed in the girls’ race were Averi Stephenson (15:19), Sophia Richardson (16:11), Halley Peterson (16:37), Tayla Peterson (17:33) and Maddie Moore (18:00). 

For the boys, Elijah Backer (22:49), Collin Nichols (26:36), Luier Ramos (28:26) and Carson Pierce (29:53) suited up for the Panthers.
