Quitman Police Report

July 7 

Sgt. Jefferey Baldwin responded to a residence on Jeanell St. and spoke to a person who advised that her 14-year-old son’s caregiver was giving him marijuana. She advised that her juvenile son had failed a drug analysis test for marijuana and other narcotics through the juvenile probation department. The 14-year-old was on supervision for an unrelated charge. The juvenile advised he smoked the CBD on his own. Baldwin referred this case to Child Protective Services and was also forwarded to Criminal Investigations.

July 10 

Officer Kevin Atkinson met with a subject at the police department for a missing person. The subject advised that she had last seen her husband on July 8 at their home. She advised Atkinson that her husband had left in the past for a couple of days when he was angry but would usually return home later. Atkinson took the missing white male’s information and contacted the surrounding law enforcement agencies so they could contact local motels in their area as well as giving them the victim’s vehicle description. Atkinson contacted all local hospitals. The following day the man’s son contacted Atkinson and advised he had returned home without incident. This case is closed.

July 11

Officer Atkinson met with a subject at the police department and took a burglary of a motor vehicle report. The person advised he believed that while his vehicle was parked at Brookshires two weeks prior, someone had stolen his cell phone valued at $200. This case will be forwarded to Criminal Investigations.

July 14 

Lt. Anita Tucker took an assault report at the police department from person who advised that the assault had taken place the day before at the UT Health Quitman Hospital. The person advised Tucker that she had been assaulted by her boyfriend’s mother after trying to take her boyfriend’s brother to the hospital for surgery. The person said that the suspect slapped her hand and wanted to pursue charges for contact assault, but she just wanted her boyfriend’s mom to stay away from her. This case was forwarded to Criminal Investigations for follow-up.  

Lt. Tucker took a burglary of a motor vehicle report at the police department. The person advised that he had things taken from his vehicle on the previous day between 1:20 and 1:45 p.m. while he was parked at the True Value Hardware store on E. Goode St. The person told Tucker that an unknown person entered his 2019 Ford Escape which was unlocked and took several items. The person was in the store for about 20 minutes and when he came out, he found that his Kindle Fire Tablet valued at $75, a cordless Dewalt 200 Impact Driver and battery valued at $180 and numerous bottles of medications had been stolen. The surveillance video will be reviewed to see if it captured the identity of any possible suspect. This case was forwarded to Criminal Investigations. 

Officer Atkinson was dispatched to the Dairy Queen for an EMS assist with a white male identified as Joshua Scott. According to EMTs, Scott was found asleep on the Dairy Queen property and had the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. After Atkinson spoke to Scott for some time he observed slurring and lack of balance which made him appear to be intoxicated. Atkinson attempted to take Scott into custody for public intoxication. Atkinson and Wood County Deputy McKenzie Chandler asked Scott to cooperate, but he advised he was not going back to jail since he just got out. Scott resisted arrest and was transported to the Wood County Jail and booked in on charges for public intoxication, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana less than two ounces, and possession of controlled substance penalty group 3 less than 28 grams. 

Officer Atkinson took an assault family violence report from a victim who had been assaulted by her boyfriend several times over the course of the past week. Atkinson responded to Puckett St. to meet with the victim and witnessed bruising on the woman’s shoulder and arms. Atkinson supplied her with the necessary packet for victim’s rights of assault family violence. The victim later decided to pursue charges and the case was given to Criminal Investigations to pursue warrants on the suspect.

Officer Atkinson responded to Dr. Scott Olson’s office on E. Goode St. where a suspect had been illegally dumping trash in the office’s dumpster. A suspect was identified and contacted by Atkinson, and the suspect admitted to dumping trash in Olson’s dumpster eight or more times. The suspect’s information was turned over to Criminal Investigations for further investigation and to pursue charges.

July 16

Officer Caitlyn Wilson responded to 409 Shady Bend Lane for a theft of a firearm and prescription medication. Wilson was advised by the person that she recently had a contractor come in the home, prior to finding the property missing. This case was forwarded to Criminal Investigations. 

July 20

Officer Atkinson took a hit and run report at the police department. The person advised they believed that their white 2016 Chevy Colorado pickup truck had been hit while at Brookshires. The person advised they didn’t notice the damage until they got home. The case was forwarded to Criminal Investigations. 

Lt. Tucker, Officers Atkinson and Caitlyn Wilson responded to the First National Bank of East Texas for a report of a white male who entered the bank screaming and throwing things. Tucker contacted a young man who was severely autistic and upset. Tucker de-escalated the situation and got the young man to go voluntarily with EMS who transported him to Tyler for treatment. There were no injured bank employees or damage to property.  

July 23 

Sgt. Baldwin responded to the UT Health Quitman Hospital after receiving a call from the security guard that they had a person come into the emergency room with a gunshot wound. Baldwin arrived as a primer gray Ford Crown Victoria was driving away from the E.R. doors and parked in the parking lot. Baldwin and Wood County deputies were advised by a witness that it was an accidental self-inflicted wound, but on closer investigation, the primer gray vehicle had bullet holes in it and spent shell casings inside the car. After further investigation, it was determined that the shooting incident occurred in Smith County and there was a second subject that had been shot. The security guard ran outside to the officers and advised that the man in the emergency room ran out of the hospital north bound. Baldwin and deputies searched the area but were unable to locate the male later identified as Matthew Jones. The following day Jones was taken into custody from a residence on Clark St. and booked into Smith County Jail by the U.S. Marshal Service for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and has a $300,000 bond. 

July 27

Officer Wilson and Chief John Farmer responded to the Brookshire’s grocery store on E. Goode St. after receiving information that a male subject that had a warrant was at the store. The wanted person was Andrew Wilson and he had an emergency detention warrant out of the Wood County Sheriff’s Office. As officers were arriving at Brookshires, Wilson was exiting the store and began walking very fast away from officers. Farmer and Officer Wilson stopped Wilson and upon detaining him found that he had two packs of salmon in his shorts that he just stolen from Brookshires. Wilson was taken into custody for theft, but Brookshires chose not to pursue charges and just wanted Wilson criminally trespassed from coming back into the store. Wilson was given a criminal trespass warning and transferred to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office where he was turned over to a deputy for transport to Tyler.
