Quitman property tax rate proposed to drop slightly
Quitman city council members approved a proposed property tax rate at last Thursday’s meeting.
Prior to the official meeting, a workshop discussing the tax rate was held. The council voted unanimously for the proposed rate of $.5411, lower than last year’s $.5473.
The maintenance and operations rate is $.39 and debt service is $.1511 for the total $.5411.
The council approved establishing a bank account to ensure accuracy and accountability for the management of Coronavirus local fiscal recovery funds of $458,000. There are restrictions and regulations concerning how the money can be spent.
The council approved an inter-local agreement with Wood County to provide fire protection and emergency service for portions of Wood County outside of the city of Quitman. The county contribution to the Quitman Fire Department is $51,663.
At their Aug. 24 meeting, county commissioners approved a one-time payment of an additional $2,000 to each of the county’s fire departments.
Quitman Mayor Randy Dunn offered thanks for the additional funds.
The council approved a negotiated settlement between the ATMOS Cities Steering Committee and ATMOS Energy Corporation for an increase in natural gas fees.
City Administrator Rodney Kieke reported the Quitman Development Corporation (QDC) is going to support Stitchin’ Heaven’s big quilt festival in October. The QDC will help with shuttle services and lighting. The festival will conclude with a concert by The Long Run, a popular Eagles tribute band.
The council passed a resolution designating Wood County Tax Assessor/Collector Carol Taylor and Angela Luman to calculate the no-new revenue tax rate and the voter approval tax rate in accordance with the Texas Tax Code.
The council approved an inter-local agreement with Wood County and Quitman to perform tax collections on behalf of the city.
A one-year maintenance agreement with East Texas Council of Governments (ETCOG) for 9-1-1 addressing was approved.
Quitman Public Library Director Delene Allen reported 8,755 patrons. There are 3,089 patrons in Quitman and 5,587 in Wood County.
