Quitman wins season finale, headed to playoffs
Quitman senior pitcher Alexis O’Neal celebrated her final game on Senior Night by allowing no hits and was one batter shy of a perfect game as the Lady Bulldogs unleashed a 13-hit attack taking a 15-0 win over Winona Friday.
O’Neal struck out six Lady Wildcat batters and gave up just one base on balls in the mercy rule shortened ball game.
O’Neal, Carly Spears, Kennedi Elmore, Ashley Davis and Larkin Spears each had two hits. Quitman led 4-0 after one inning, added six more in the second to make it 10-0 and added five more runs making it 15-0 and ending the game.
O’Neal, Davis and Reiny Luman each had doubles while speedy Hannah Holland had the big hit with an inside-the-park home run on a hit in the right-centerfield gap. Holland stepped on home plate before Winona got the ball in the infield.
The Lady Bulldogs are headed to bi-district to take on District 14-3A champion Queen City. Queen City is 19-7 on the year and was 11-1 in district action. The teams will play the best of three games for bi-district. The games are being played at the softball facilities at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall. The first game is Wednesday at 6 p.m. followed by Thursday night action. If the teams go 1-1 in their first two games, the third and final contest will be immediately following the first Thursday game.
