Quitman withstands late charge to rout Harmony for district win

The Quitman Bulldogs took out some frustration on Harmony last Friday, jumping on the Eagles early, and put them away with a 65-42 revenge victory. The Bulldogs lost 66-60 to the Eagles in their opening district game in December.

Quitman’s Levi Thompson put on a clinic, especially in the third quarter, when he made 15 of the Bulldog’s 18 points, as the sophomore sharpshooter put on a show for the home fans. He scored long range treys, short jump shots and one exciting down-the-lane layup. Thompson had a career night hitting for 31 points.

Ford Tannebaum got things started with a triple followed by an Aiden Corrior free throw and Landon Richey shot to take a an early 6-0 edge. With the score 6-2, Ford Tannebaum hit another three pointer which was followed by another trey by his brother Jack Tannebaum making it a 12-2 game with less than a minute in the quarter. Aiden Corrior hit another triple and Thompson got his first bucket to make it 17-4 at the end of one period.

Thompson got things started in the second quarter with another triple followed by Jack Tannebaum’s second three-pointer. Richey had another bucket close in, fighting off Harmony defenders in the process. A fancy spin move in the lane by Thompson for two was just a glimpse of what he would do in the third quarter. Thompson finished off the second quarter with a short jumper, and Quitman led 32-15 at the half.

Thompson then proceeded to take over in the third quarter as teammates fed him the ball when he started a shooting spree which netted 15 of his 31 points. Quitman led 54-24 going into the final quarter.

Harmony did its best to make a comeback in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles could not overcome the Bulldog lead. The pressure defense caused the Bulldogs to commit several fouls, and Harmony made 10-15 free throws to close the gap.

Thompson had a pair of fourth quarter triples, and senior Corrior hit a bucket and three free throws in the final minutes to keep the Bulldogs a safe distance ahead in the game. Brady Floyd added a couple of free throws, and Ford Tannebaum finished off Quitman scoring with a pair of late free throws giving the Bulldogs the 65-42 win.

Quitman Head Coach Brandon Fields was obviously pleased with the win.

“I think we played well and put it all together,” he said. “I told my players when we make shots, especially three pointers, we are hard to beat. When we play hard and fly around on defense we are also tough to beat. We got on them early and we didn’t really look back. We have struggled in district games because we start slow. I just told them if we make shots and just play our game we can beat anybody. We just have to keep grinding.”

After Thompson’s 31, Corrior and Jack Tannebaum each had nine points, Ford Tannebaum had eight while Richey and Floyd each had four points.

After Tuesday’s game at Chapel Hill the Bulldogs face Winona Friday at Delbert Ballard Gym.
